Miss Gallagher and Miss Hicks - Year 2
Welcome to Owl Class!
Hello, we are Miss Gallagher and Miss Hicks and we are both really excited to be the teachers in Owl Class this year. We are also extremely lucky to have Miss Timmis and Mrs Gutteridge supporting us in our learning throughout the week.
In Year 2 we work hard, have fun and always do our best!
We share busy but enjoyable days, learning but having fun.
Keep up the fantastic work Owls and always remember that we have a ‘Hoot’ when learning in our class!!
In year 2 the school day starts at 8:45 am and finishes at 15:30 pm. The children line up outside their classroom door In their dedicated outdoor learning space. Morning break is at 10:30am where a healthy snack of fruit or vegetable is provided by the school. Milk is available for children to drink at break time if paid for by the parents or carers. Contact the office for more information on this.
Please click on the link below for curriculum information for the current academic year. This has details on the topics we will cover.
Phonics and Spelling
Our daily phonics sessions follow the Read Write Inc. Programme. During these sessions children learn the relationship between letters and sounds and secure the foundations for successful reading, writing and spelling. Our puppet ‘Fred the Frog’ helps us to speak in pure sounds to improve our phonics. We also use sound buttons to support our reading and writing.
During year 2 your child will begin to have spellings to learn. They will be linked to sounds or spelling patterns that they have been doing at school. Children will be tested on a Friday on the words sent home plus they will write sentences that will be dictated to them writing words within those sentences that follow the same sound or spelling pattern. New spellings will be sent home each Friday for the following week and test results will be sent home on a Monday.
Owl class has outdoor PE on a Monday and indoor PE on a Friday but please ensure that your child has their P.E kit in school every day and that they have something warm to wear for when we go outside including trainers . We like learning all about why exercise and being healthy is so important.
PE Kits should include:
White t-shirt (Roecroft logo tshirts are available from the uniform supplier)
Black zip up hoody (no other colour please)
Black tracksuit bottoms/leggings (no other colour please)
Socks (in case wearing tights on PE day)
Our homework in year 2 will consist of Reading, DoodleMaths, DoodleEnglish, spellings in line with phonics/spelling groups and Times Table Rockstar (Summer Term).
Children are expected to read at home and have their reading record signed by the adult that they read to with any relevant comments. The children will have both a fiction and a non-fiction book for them to enjoy sharing with you at home, this will give them the opportunity to discuss the differences between them. When they are ready to change their books they place them in the book box in their classrooms.
Changing day for Year 2 is Tuesday in Autumn term 2020.
Each child has their own DoodleMaths login and we recommend for children to spend 5-10 minutes on DoodleMaths everyday or when possible. The children really enjoy practising their mental maths via this app and should be completing this independently.
We will have a small spelling and dictation test on a Friday Morning which the children will have been expected to practice for at home. This will be completed in their spelling groups.
Times Tables will be completed through an app called Times Table Rockstar in the Summer Term. The children will really enjoy practising their times tables through an app.
Reading and Library Books
Our library session is on a Thursday afternoon; children will be able to choose their own book to enjoy in the classroom. They have the opportunity to choose from a range of texts from a variety of genres.
We build our reading and comprehension skills through weekly reading sessions in our English lesson.
The children take part in group and individual reading sessions across the week. Staff do not make comments in the home reading record as we keep our own more detailed records in school linked to the year group curriculum objectives.
The children love sharing stories as a class. We explore a range of texts across the year to develop our love for books and comprehension skills in a more complex text.
*Please note some of the above information may vary in Autumn Term 2020 due to COVID guidelines*
