Miss Thomas - Year 4

Hello, I am Miss Thomas and I am extremely excited to be the teacher of Hawk Class. We are lucky to have the wonderful Miss Sumal to support us in our learning too! You will find the pupils of Hawk class working very hard on the top floor of the school in our bright, spacious and well-equipped classroom – the perfect learning environment!

Our aim in year four is for the children to be ready to move on to Middle School with confidence;  happy in the knowledge that they are well prepared for the next big step in their education.

Daily Routine

Year Four pupils are let in through the double doors on the path between the two playgrounds. This is also where children leave from at the end of the day.

The school day starts at 8:45am and ends at 3:30pm

Morning break is at 10:50 am. In Key Stage 2, children are encouraged to bring in a healthy snack to have at break time. This could be fruit, vegetables, rice cakes or a small sandwich.

Milk is available for children to drink at break time if paid for by the parents or carers – please contact the office for more information.

Year 4 Curriculum Overview 2019/20

Phonics and Spelling Programme

In Key Stage 2 we continue with the Read Write Inc. phonics and spelling programme.

Once the phonics programme has been completed children move onto the spelling programme.

Children are placed in groups according to which spelling patterns they need to work on. The spelling patterns studied are those in the National Curriculum. Spelling lessons take place every day between 9:10am and 9:30am.

A spelling homework sheet is given out every Friday, the children should work on the spelling pattern at home daily alongside the learning that takes place each day in school.

The spelling test will take place every Friday. Children's results will be sent home the following week.

Please ensure your child has warm clothing to wear outside, including trainers as we use the field all year round.

Indoor PE kit: A white round necked t-shirt, black shorts

Outdoor PE kit: A white round necked t-shirt, black jogging bottoms, a warm black zip up tracksuit top, trainers and a separate pair of socks (if wearing tights).

All long hair should be tied back for PE lessons and earrings should be removed or covered with micropore tape if recently pierced.

Children’s spellings should be practised daily alongside children using Doodle Maths and Times Tables Rockstars.

Children are expected to be reading frequently throughout the week at home to an adult.  Please sign their reading record when reading has been completed so their book can be changed.

Reading and Library Books

Hawk Class’ library session is on a Friday. Children will be able to choose their own book to share and enjoy in the classroom. They have the opportunity to choose from a range of texts from a variety of genres.

In Year 4, children can change their reading book when they have finished reading it and are ready for the next book.

When your child is ready to change their book please ensure you have signed their reading record and say they have finished their book.
