Mrs Polson- Reception
Hello and welcome to Duckling Class. The children are taught by myself and are assisted in the classroom by the lovely Miss Sohal.
All the children have settled into Duckling Class and are becoming independent and confident learners. They love learning together and living the values of Roecroft on a daily basis.
Our topic this term is "Let's Explore!". We will be carrying out various exciting experiments. We will be investigating what it was like when the dinosaurs were alive and wondering what it would be back if the dinosaurs came back! We will be growing beanstalks and looking at the life cycle of a bean when we read Jack and the Beanstalk. During Science Week we will be exploring floating and sinking and investigating rainbows. We will also be doing lots of lovely Easter crafts and activities.
The children will develop their speaking and listening skills in front of the class and with groups of their friends during circle times, values and show and tell sessions. Every week, children have the opportunity to share interesting items from home and talk about exciting events that have happened at the weekend.
We strive to make Duckling class a fun, happy and safe place to learn as well as making your child's first year at Roecroft fun, action packed and full of learning and memories.
Doors open at 8.50am for children to come into school. Children line up on the playground in their class lines and their teacher will come out to get them. Children come into the classroom, put their book bags, coats, water bottles and any other belongings away, complete their self registration and sit themselves on the carpet to answer the register and ready to start the day.

Through the ‘read-write-inc’ phonics scheme we use at Roecroft we will begin to learn the set 1 sounds. Children always enjoy learning the different sounds and the rhymes used for handwriting. All children will have a phonics booklet sent home with the sounds of the set they are learning. When your child moves onto a new sound set, a new booklet will be sent home for you to practice with them. Children really enjoy their phonics sessions and, learning the handwriting rhymes, meeting ‘Fred the Frog’ who helps to sound out words and blend words with our partners and trying our best to be ‘star of the session’. Children always make some fabulous progress and become more confident every day, but practising at home will always support this.
PE days for Ducklings is on a Thursday, however PE kits can be kept in school on your child’s peg all week. Black shorts and Roecroft PE t-shirt is perfect for indoor PE. Children don’t need trainers as they will be in the hall until the weather is warmer in the summer. A letter will be sent home asking for outdoor shoes when we need them.

Homework - DoodleMaths
Your child will have a log in to the 'DoodleMaths' app which can be accessed on tablet computers, phones, laptops and PC's. Children can earn stars in a virtual world to build their own avatar. Children should complete their daily questions as well as playing the other maths games and activities available to them. Teachers will monitor children's progress and award a 'Doodle Star of the Week' for those children who are consistently answering questions and earning stars on a daily basis.
