Roecroft Lower School

Miss Hylton - Year 4

Hawk

Hello, I am Miss Hylton and I am extremely excited to be the teacher of Hawk Class. I am lucky to have Miss Cenami to support us in our learning too! You will find the pupils of Hawk class working very hard on the top floor of the school in our bright, spacious and well-equipped classroom – the perfect learning environment!

We participate in different topics in our humanities subjects throughout the year, including investigating the Romans and studying local and international Geography including a project on North America.

Our aim is for the children to be ready to move on to middle school with confidence and happy in the knowledge that they are well prepared for the next big step in their education.

Daily Routine

Year Four pupils are let in through the double doors on the path between the two playgrounds. Hawk class will leave from the Duckling class doors in the Reception playground at the end of the day.

The school day for Hawk Class starts at 8.55am and ends at 3.30pm

For morning break Key Stage 2 children are encouraged to bring in a healthy snack to have at break time. This could be fruit, vegetables, rice cakes or a small sandwich.

Milk is available for children to drink at break time if paid for by the parents or carers – please contact the office for more information

Year 4 curriculum overview 2023-2024

Phonics and Spelling Programme

In year 4, we continue to use Spelling Shed to teach spellings and focus on a different pattern each week.

Children are expected to practise their spellings at home via the Spelling Shed online portal.

If you need support logging in to your child's account please speak to Miss Houghton.

PE

PE lessons will be taking place indoors (Wednesday) and outdoors (Tuesday), so please remember that children will need to come in to school wearing their PE kits on both relevant days each week. Please also ensure your child has warm clothing to wear outside, including trainers as we use the field all year round.

Our PE kit is:

- Roecroft black shorts, or plain black shorts
- Roecroft green PE top, or dark green t-shirt
- Roecroft black joggers, or plain black joggers
- Roecroft black hoody, or plain black hoody
- Trainers (not Plimsolls)
- Roecroft PE socks, or green PE socks

All long hair should be tied back for PE lessons and earrings should be removed or covered with micropore tape if recently pierced.

Homework

Children’s spellings should be practised daily alongside children using Doodle Maths and Times Tables Rock Stars.

All children on and off our reading scheme are expected to be reading frequently throughout the week at home to an adult.  Please sign their reading record when you have listened to your child read aloud and discussed the book.

Reading and Library Books

In Year 4, if the children are on our reading scheme, their books will be changed on a Thursday. When your child is ready to change their book please ensure you have signed their reading record and say they have finished their book.

Children will also have the opportunity to visit our school library each week and select a book to take home to read.
